Luton Lights Up for Christmas is on Saturday 21 November 2026, free, 11am to 7.30pm around the Town Hall. The line-up and switch-on time are still to come.
Luton Lights Up for Christmas is on Saturday 21 November 2026. It is free, it runs 11am to 7.30pm, and it is centred on Luton Town Hall on George Street, LU1 2BQ. The council describes it as a day of live music and entertainment across the town centre, sponsored by Luton Rising and delivered with Luton BID and Luton Point (Explore Luton).
One thing is missing, and it is the thing people search for: the council has not yet said what time the lights actually go on. Its own listing states that “Times & locations of the entertainment will be announced closer to the time”.
Everything here was checked on 5 September against Luton Council’s own pages. Last year’s programme is given below for scale, clearly marked as 2025, because it is the best guide to what the day looks like until the 2026 line-up lands.
Confirmed for 2026
- Date: Saturday 21 November 2026
- Times: 11am to 7.30pm
- Where: Luton Town Hall, George Street, Luton LU1 2BQ, and across the town centre
- Cost: free
- Organiser: Luton Council, sponsored by Luton Rising, with Luton BID and Luton Point
What is still to be announced
The switch-on time, the performers, and where in the town centre each act appears. In 2025 the free performances started at 11am and the lights went on at 6pm, with street entertainment and festive crafts through the day, Paddington meeting families outside the Town Hall from 2pm to 6.30pm, and bauble decorating at Luton Point (Luton Council). A 6pm switch-on inside an 11am to 7.30pm window is the pattern to plan around, but it is last year’s time, not a promise about this one.
Roads: George Street closes for the day
For the 2025 switch-on the council closed George Street, Upper George Street from Wellington Street to Gordon Street, Manchester Street, Wellington Street from Stuart Street to George Street, and Peel Street, from 12pm to 8pm or until the event finished, with no diversion routes available (Luton Today, 16 October 2025).
“No diversion” is the part that catches people out. Those are the streets the buses and the town centre traffic use, so if you are driving in that afternoon, come in on the ring road and park, rather than aiming for George Street.
Two evening parking facts worth knowing, both from our own parking in Luton page: on-street parking is free after 6pm in every Luton zone except Toddington Road, but the council’s car parks charge £2 from 6pm to 8am, so a car left in Vicarage Street until the lights go on costs the day rate and then the overnight one. Anything else shutting that week is on our Luton roadworks and travel page.
Is there a Luton Christmas market?
Not in the continental sense in the town centre. The nearest thing is the charity one: the Keech Christmas Market at Barnfield College on 28 and 29 November 2026, 10am to 4pm, £3 entry; details are on our Luton Christmas markets page. Luton’s town-centre festive programme is a run of separate one-day events rather than a standing market. In 2025 those were Santa’s Sleigh at Market Hill on Saturday 29 November, 11am to 6pm, real reindeer at Market Hill on Sunday 7 December, 11am to 2pm, Christmas in Hat Gardens on Saturday 13 December with live local music, creative activities and a Santa post box, and a walk-in snow globe and carols in St George’s Square on Friday 20 December, alongside weekend crafts, storytelling and character appearances at Luton Point (Luton Council).
None of those dates has been confirmed for 2026. On last year’s timing the full festive programme was published in the week before the switch-on, in mid-November.
Elsewhere in the borough
The council also put 20 new neighbourhood Christmas trees into local centres in 2025, funded through Luton Rising, so the town centre is not the only place with lights (Luton Council). Luton does have a pantomime this season, an amateur one: the Griffin Players’ Sleeping Beauty at Luton Library Theatre on 5, 6, 12 and 13 December (Luton Library Theatre). The nearest professional pantos are Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Grove Theatre in Dunstable, 4 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, which is Central Bedfordshire rather than Luton borough, and Aladdin at Leighton Buzzard Library Theatre, 15 to 30 January 2027 (Big Panto Guide). All three are on our Luton pantomime page.
Updated 6 October: an earlier version of this page said there was no pantomime in Luton this season. The Griffin Players’ Sleeping Beauty at the Library Theatre is one.
