Remembrance Sunday 2026 is 8 November. Luton's parade, the Town Hall war memorial service, the Marsh Road and Stopsley acts, and the streets that close.
Remembrance Sunday 2026 is Sunday 8 November. It is always the second Sunday in November, the Sunday nearest Armistice Day, and the national service at the Cenotaph is at 11am that morning. Armistice Day itself is Wednesday 11 November 2026.
Luton Council has not published its 2026 arrangements yet. On last year’s timing it does so in the first week of November, so this page sets out what the town does every year, from the council’s own account of 2025, and will be updated the moment the 2026 times are confirmed.
What Luton does, from last year’s programme
The town centre act of remembrance is at the war memorial in the square outside the Town Hall, on the George Street frontage. In 2025 the parade set off at 10.40am from Park Street West and marched to the Town Hall, where the service began at 11am with prayers, civic leaders taking part, wreaths laid at the memorial and a silence (Luton Council).
Two other acts of remembrance ran alongside it:
- Marsh Road war memorial, on Remembrance Sunday at 11am
- Stopsley war memorial, on Armistice Day at 11am
In 2026 that second date falls on a Wednesday.
None of those times is confirmed for this year. They have held steady for several years, which is why they are worth planning around, but check the council’s announcement before you set an alarm.
The roads, and the ones with no way round
The town centre closure for Remembrance Sunday is unusually strict, and worth knowing if you are driving anywhere near George Street that morning. In 2025 the council closed Alma Street, Castle Street, Castle Street roundabout, Church Street from St Mary’s to Park Street West, Flowers Way, George Street, Gordon Street, Manchester Street, New Bedford Road from Alma Street to Manchester Street, Peel Street, Park Street West from Park Street to Flowers Way, Upper George Street from Wellington Street to Gordon Street, Vicarage Street and Wellington Street from Stuart Street to George Street, from 9.30am to 12pm, with no diversion routes available for any of them (Luton Today, 16 October 2025).
Separately, Marsh Road closed for its full length, with a diversion via Waller Avenue, Dunstable Road, Oakley Road, Poynters Road, Leagrave High Street and Grange Avenue. On Armistice Day a short section of St Thomas’ Road, on the west side of the war memorial traffic island at its junction with Hitchin Road, closed for 45 minutes from 10.45am, again with no diversion.
Vicarage Street is on that list, and Vicarage Street is the council’s biggest town centre car park at 218 spaces. If the same order is made this year, get in before 9.30am or park elsewhere. Tariffs are on our parking in Luton page, and anything else closing that week is on our Luton roadworks and travel page.
What to expect on the day
It is a civic service in the open air rather than a ticketed event. There is nothing to book, nothing to pay, and no seating: people stand on the Town Hall steps and around the memorial, which is why the whole of George Street is given over to it. Arrive by about 10.30am if you want to see the wreath laying rather than the back of a crowd.
The memorial is worth a minute of your time whenever you pass it. It is a Portland stone cenotaph by Sir Reginald Blomfield, topped by Hamo Thornycroft’s bronze winged figure of Peace with a palm frond raised in her right hand, and it was unveiled on 10 December 1922. Its four sides carry 1,285 names from the First World War. The bronze panels on the stepped base came much later, unveiled on 10 November 1957, and carry 672 names from the Second World War. It has been Grade II listed since 1982 (IWM War Memorials Register).
It stands in the square at the Town Hall, so the parade and the service happen in the same place: there is no separate memorial garden to find.
